7.4Worth a tryCritic score

First-impressions review: based on the free opening chapters (1–3) and the official synopsis. The novel is still being updated; we will revisit the score as it goes.

The Luna Queen’s Rebirth opens at the end of a life. Ellie is dying of wolfsbane poison from a knife meant for her mate, Dominic — she pushed him out of the assassin’s way — and all she wants is to see him one last time. Her handmaiden Abigail goes to fetch him. The person who walks in is her stepsister, Vivian, wearing Ellie’s golden tiara: Dominic has already crowned her Luna.

A first life that explains everything

It is a brutal opening, and it does a lot of work fast. We learn that Ellie always chased Dominic while he treated her with cold indifference; that when the Moon Goddess named them fated mates at the mating ball, his reaction was “I suppose we have no choice”; and that his pack has grown into the strongest in the realm by swallowing weaker ones. By the time Ellie dies, the novel has made its case that the bond itself was the trap.

Eighteen again

Chapter two is the rebirth. Ellie wakes in her childhood bedroom with its pale yellow walls and fairy lights, her wolf suddenly clear and strong in her mind. The wolf tells her the Moon Goddess saw their tragic end and intervened. Her mother — whom Dominic would one day hurt — is alive and downstairs, humming over pancakes. Ellie’s plan is simple and refreshingly unsentimental: don’t chase Dominic, don’t trust Vivian, and break the mate bond before it forms. “Dominic could have Vivian, the woman he truly loved.”

Vivian’s first appearance in the new life — throwing her arms around Ellie with a honey-sweet “Good morning, sister!” — lands precisely because we have just watched her gloat over a deathbed.

The coffee rebellion

Chapter three is the first public crack in the old script. Dominic’s friend Marcus holds out a credit card and expects Ellie to fetch everyone’s coffee, as she always has. She says no — and adds that if the Alpha wants something, he can ask himself. The courtyard erupts in whispers. Vivian swoops in to volunteer, and Dominic, who has never once said please to Ellie, immediately tells Vivian not to trouble herself. It is a small scene with a sharp point, and it shows the story knows exactly which petty humiliations its readers want reversed.

What could be better

Dominic and Vivian are, so far, very one-note: he is cold, she is fake-sweet. The rebirth-and-reject formula is also a crowded field, and the opening does not yet show what will set this one apart. CrushRead’s own reader reactions are split — “Frustrating” is the most common one — and with only a handful of ratings so far, we have left the reader score off for now.

Who should read it

If you enjoy werewolf rebirth stories where the heroine refuses the fated mate who failed her — and you want the satisfaction to start early — this delivers it from chapter three.

What works

  • A gripping deathbed opening
  • The heroine has a clear plan from chapter two
  • Early, satisfying reversals

What doesn’t

  • One-note villains so far
  • A crowded rebirth-and-reject formula
7.4Worth a try

The bottom line

A brisk werewolf rebirth story with a strong deathbed opening and early payoffs, held back by one-note villains.

Best for: Readers who want a werewolf heroine who rejects the fated mate who failed her
