The Billionaire’s Intern review

First-impressions review: based on the free opening chapters (1–3) and the official synopsis. We will update the score once we have read further.
The Billionaire’s Intern is a very traditional CEO romance, and it knows it. Three chapters in, the hero and heroine have not spoken, and the book seems happy to take its time.
The one spot
Maya Thompson opens the café at 5:30 every morning, takes night classes, and looks after her younger brother Jamie, who still has his hospital wristband on when she gets home. Her professor tells her she has won this year’s single internship at Blackwood Enterprises, the company that picks one university and one student a year. “Sometimes, hard work beats pedigree,” he tells her. The first chapter does a good job of showing what she is up against: a pressed secondhand blouse, the only decent shoes she owns, a receptionist who looks at her outfit as if it has offended her, and a thick confidentiality packet she is told to sign on the executive floor.
The ghost in the glass tower
Chapter two is a mood piece. Maya works under Elle, the senior executive assistant, whose rules (“No coffee runs. This isn’t a sitcom.”) are the funniest lines in the opening. Everyone lowers their voice when they say Mr. Blackwood’s name. At lunch on the rooftop, a text tells Maya that Jamie’s levels are stable, a quiet reminder of why she is there. When Damien Blackwood comes back early, the floor is cleared and roped off, and Maya sees only a jawline and a flash of cufflink reflected in the glass.
He notices
Chapter three switches to Damien, 35, back from a two-week summit in Tokyo. He does not notice interns, but through the fogged glass of an old storage room he notices her: the plain blouse, the foot tapping under the desk, the shoes scuffed at the toe. He reads her file over an untouched dinner (orphaned at eighteen, caring for her brother, top grades) and, without explanation, orders her moved to the west wing near the inner teams. It is a familiar move, but the scuffed-shoes detail gives it a specific, human starting point.
What could be better
Nothing much happens yet. The three chapters are almost all build-up, and Damien (“a ghost wrapped in steel”) is described in the usual billionaire language without much that is his own. The writing is clean but sometimes overdone, with lines like “Power made flesh.” The assistant is called Elle in chapter two and Ellie in chapter three, and on CrushRead the latest chapter titles have numbering that does not match the chapter count (634 chapters listed, ongoing). We have also left the reader score off for now: there are only a handful of ratings on CrushRead so far, too few to mean much.
Who should read it
If you want a slow, old-fashioned CEO-and-intern romance with a hardworking heroine and a hero who watches from a distance, this is a comfortable start. If you need drama or banter early on, the opening will feel slow.
What works
- Maya’s money worries and her brother Jamie give her real stakes
- Elle’s dry office rules
- The scuffed-shoes detail is a nice hook for the hero
What doesn’t
- Very little happens in three chapters
- Hero described in stock billionaire terms
- Small continuity slips (Elle/Ellie)
The bottom line
A clean, sympathetic but slow CEO-and-intern opening: the heroine is easy to root for, but the leads have not met after three chapters.
Best for: Readers who like slow, classic billionaire-boss romances with a hardworking heroine
