First-impressions review: based on the free opening chapters (1–3) and the official synopsis. The novel is still being updated; we will revisit the score as it goes.

Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma starts with a countdown. The narrator has seventeen minutes before the royal escort arrives. Alpha Prince Grayson, the King’s only heir, has been in a coma for months, and the crown wants an heir anyway: every one of the thirteen packs must send at least one unmated female candidate. Her father has signed her up. Her boyfriend, Calvin, has promised to knock three times at two in the morning and run away with her.

He does not knock.

A cruel, efficient first act

The opening chapter is strong on small details. Her packed bag holds two sets of clothes, her late mother’s locket, three years of kitchen-work savings and a photo of her brother Ronan with his front teeth missing. She is wearing her mother’s faded blue dress with two buttons gone. Every detail tells you how little she has and how much she was counting on Calvin.

Chapter two delivers the betrayal the genre promises: Calvin is with her stepsister, Maren, and does not even bother to apologise. His speech — calling her a prude, saying Maren “knows how to make a man feel wanted” — is ugly, and the novel lets it be ugly. The heroine’s response is the most interesting beat in the opening: not rage, but grief for a boy who never existed. Then she picks up the locket and walks out to the black car with the royal crest.

The wolf, and the eyes

The fantasy element is what lifts this above a straightforward revenge setup. Her mother dosed her as a child to keep her wolf from developing too fast, warning her she was “too different” and that people would try to use it. Her wolf is bigger and stronger than a Gamma’s should be, and she has spent her life hiding it.

At the palace, the Prince’s room is guarded by a translucent, glowing wolf — and when she is alone with him, the narrator is sure his eyes open and look at her. The doctor dismisses it as a candidate seeking attention. Then the other girls arrive in silk and diamonds, mock her cotton dress, and the spirit wolf rises and fills the room with a rumble nobody can explain. It is a well-built scene, and it makes clear that her hidden wolf and the sleeping prince are connected.

What could be better

The premise leans hard on the genre’s favourite ingredients — a cruel father, a smug stepsister, a cheating boyfriend, mean girls in expensive dresses — and in the opening, the antagonists are more types than people. The surrogate set-up (“virgin, healthy, ready to breed”) will also be uncomfortable for some readers. With only a handful of reader ratings on CrushRead so far, we have left the reader score off for now.

Who should read it

If you like werewolf romances with an underdog heroine, a hidden power and a hero who is (for now) unconscious, the opening chapters are tight, vivid and easy to binge.

What works

  • Strong, specific opening chapter
  • The heroine’s grief rings true
  • The spirit wolf and hidden-power mystery hook you

What doesn’t

  • Stock villains (stepsister, cheating boyfriend, mean girls)
  • The surrogate premise won’t suit everyone
7.6Recommended
